Factors Hindering Self-Acceptance

April 16, 2023

You probably already know whether you have a high or low level of self-acceptance. Yet, to gain an even better idea, consider your childhood.

Were your parents or primary caretakers critical and negative? Did they criticize you as a person rather than your behavior, or did they continuously compare you to your peers? This may develop as a hidden trait within you, affecting your level of self-acceptance. Here are some factors that might be impeding your progress toward self-acceptance.

1.  Continually comparing yourself with others may lead to feelings of inadequacy. The only fair and rational comparison is to compare oneself from yesterday’s version to the version today!
2.  Self-blame and self-criticism, feeling guilty, and lamenting the past also don’t help. The past is over; try to focus and live in the present moment.
3.  Social media activity (likes, comments, shares, and follows) have evolved into a source of endorsement. Keep in mind that you don’t need the approval of your followers to feel good about yourself. Self-acceptance can be lowered by frequent usage of social media and idealizing the things that others post.

Remember
Self-acceptance is a lifelong path that molds the proper mindset to live the life of your dreams.
